Medium Format film and cameraless techniques

lily dowd is a contemporary photography-based artist situated in pōneke. she works primarily in medium format film photography, and camera-less techniques called lumen prints. currently going into the final year of her master's in fine arts, lily completed her bachelor of design with first class, majoring in photography in 2021.

Dowd often gravitates to themes and ideas surrounding memory and personal experience. asking questions to how we return back to moments through photographs and remember through them. using cameraless techniques, dowd feels an organic connection to the lived experience captured directly and abstractly on the surface of the gelatin silver paper.

her current research asks questions of what a photograph means and if her work fits into this category. moving into a collaboration, dowd and the paper move in front of one another, marking, exposing, aging, changing and disappearing…
